The Lore
The dragon totems were found by a team of magescians who were trying to uncover stones and gems at the Desert Quarry. The Quarry Master, Aventis Viore, sanctioned that section of the quarry for more careful and precise digging when the first totems were found. Upon more investigation, a special team of archaeologists that were hired for the excavation found that the site had been that of an old ruin of a society long past. They speculated that these dragon totems were hand crafted by magescians of old in reverence to the gods and their dragon creations, emulating what the gods could do as they crafted each dragon.
It wasn't until the leaders of the races -- Aevah, Marcus, and Drago -- were made aware of the finding that they were able to complete the tale of these fascinating artifacts. They stated that these totems were actually the handiwork of the gods themselves. In fact, they were the mold for each dragon that roamed Magesc back when the world was first created. When imbued with the gods magic and power, the dragon totems would spring to life and create the dragons we now know.
This revelation sparked many a curiosity. It was also then discovered that when these totems were introduced to a dragon soul, they would glow with a strange ethereal magic. When imbued with enough of a dragon's power, these totems would evolve into something the user desired and the more souls that were imbued meant the stronger the creature that emerged would be. These creatures that have sprouted from the totems have become known as the kolkyrae or kolkyr spirits dependent upon the grade of totem that was utilized for the summoning. Wherein the high grade totem would produce a kolkyrae, a low grade totem would produce a less powerful kolkyr spirit.
When word got out about these magical relics, people came from far and wide to the quarry to get their hands on a precious totem. Aventis had sold off many to different merchants, making him quite a wealthy man. The entire area of the old ruins was quarantined, inaccessible to any and all travelers while at the quarry. Only Aventis and a select group of archaeologists are ever able to farm these totems, but that doesn't mean you couldn't try and sneak into the heavily guarded ruins or pass and look for the totems within the world of sellers. The dragon totems are still found in caravans and many sellers around the world, but have become a beautiful artifact to hold onto until the perfect moment of summoning.
It has always been said that the creatures that come from the dragon totems are lucky, bringing abundance when traveling with a companion.

The Dragon Totems
There are two grades of dragon totems: High Grade and Low Grade. A high grade totem is one that is pristine and in perfect shape, almost completely recovered without any breakage when excavated. A low grade totem has been damaged by the excavation, but still has the ability to summon a spirit. However, the low grade totems cannot hold a large amount of magic as the magical aether will seep from the cracks, thus creating weaker kolkyrae. These different grades reflect what is able to be summoned forth from the totem.
High Grade Dragon Totem: These totems can summon a single being called a kolkyrae. They are much more powerful than the kolkyr spirit counterparts, even though they may not look it. The different totems represent different horn styles the kolkyrae will obtain after the infusion with dragon souls. The sapphire totem has more frontal, lobed horns. The jade totem offers a more windswept horn. The gold totem gives a more antler-like appearance. And the ruby totem offers horns protruding from the back of the head around to the front.
Low Grade Dragon Totem: These totems have been broken, but can still summon a single kolkyr spirit. They are less powerful and typically turn out more animalistic in appearance than their high grade counterparts, but are nevertheless still a useful addition to any team.
The Kolkyrae
Kolkyrae are full-fledged beings in the world of Magesc. They are about the size of an apprentice magescian and have special horns, ears, and glowing eyes as well as a glowing crystal in their chests signifying one or both of their elemental affinities. Their skin and hair can be any color, but are mainly based upon their elemental affinity. They each also have a hair tuft that is often symbolic of their elemental affinities. They typically have sharp claws on both their hands and feet which are their main form of physical defense against their enemies.
Kolkyr spirits are more like companions and are oftentimes used as pets by the people of Magesc. They do hold the power of the dragon who bore them and can utilize some magical skills in battle to help defend their owner..
Note that when speaking about the race as a whole, use the term "kolkyrae".
Stages
Dragon TotemDragon totems are typically bought from either Peddler's Rock or from the gypsy caravans. Obtaining these totems are the first step in owning a kolkyrae. Once ownership is taken, a person must imbue it with one or two different types of dragon souls before growth can occur. Once the magic of the dragon souls has been successfully absorbed by the totems, a magical kolkyrae will be summoned in its place.

KolkyraeThe kolkyrae are spirits who reside within the dragon totems crafted by the gods long ago, and are able to be revived at the expense of dragon souls. Once grown, a kolkyrae can live out their lives in peace and harmony amongst the rest of Magesc. Meanwhile, a kolkyr spirit cannot access as much magical power, and thus doesn't fully develop or form like their 'bigger siblings', oftentimes still having some semblance of the dragon totem itself within its transformation. But they are just as much useful for the betterment of Magesc by being helpers and companions to the majority.
